Residents of the Ayeduase new site in Kumasi near the KNUST were relieved to have three hostels fined Ghc 9000 for unlawful disposal of waste.
The Asokore Mampong District Court was responsible for the fine on 3 hostels within that area who have been disposing of their fecal matter into a public drain. The stench created by this action has been a major concern to residents within the area. According to residents, this has been going on for over 15 years.
The ruling was as a result of Luv FM’s sanitation campaign with the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA).
Sanitation in Hostels
The Law in Ghana is very clear about hostel sanitation. Each hostel must have a large enough septic tank that must be emptied frequently to keep the hostel sanitary and livable. Failure to maintain sanitary conditions could lead to the closure of hostels.
Students also have a role to play in maintaining basic sanitary conditions. If you realize any foul scent coming from your water closet then report it to management immediately.
