The Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) have limited all hall week celebrations to one week with effect from the 2017/2018 academic year. The vice dean of students of KNUST, Mr. William A. Garibah has said the period scheduled for mid-semester break/assessment of lecturers and courses of students on the 2017/2018 academic calendar is for the celebration of all hall weeks in the school.
According to him, students who also want to visit home can do so within the week. Mr. Garibah said the break is to help the students relax and engage in extracurricular activities.
‘During that break, if it is the first semester then all the society weeks could be organized at that time and students who for one reason or the other want to visit home and come back can do so. So it’s a period that the students are supposed to use to actually rest and go off the book completely.’
According to the vice dean, the various colleges, faculties and departmental associations must celebrate their weeks within the break for the first semester. The mid-semester break for the first semester is scheduled for Monday, October 30, 2017.
“All departmental associations have weeks, the college associations have weeks, that is what is supposed to be done in the first semester,” he added.
“The second semester, after mid-semester, the one week break is meant for the hall weeks to celebrate their weeks. All the halls will celebrate their weeks same time. The vice chancellor believes that it is hall week not inter hall week so that if your hall is not capable of drawing up programs that are attractive, nobody will come, even your own hall members will run away to other halls. So it is a challenge,” he stressed.
The various hall and societal weeks previously were celebrated differently, however, the dean of students believes students need more time to focus on academic work. Previously 7 out of the 17 weeks for the semester were used for hall week celebrations.
Earlier this year the University of Cape Coast cancelled all hall week celebrations due to violent clashes and destruction of University property.
