The University of Ghana is set to build new hostels for students following a crisis in accommodation that left thousands of freshers stranded. The University of Ghana hostels are few in proportion to the number of students admitted yearly.
Addressing students at this year’s matriculation which took place on September 28, 2019, the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ghana, Professor Ebenezer Oduro Owusu mentioned that the university has appropriated some land for the construction of new University of Ghana hostels. We do not yet know what the new hostels will be called, but we do know that it will ease the accommodation problem that has plagued the University for years.
Professor Ebenezer Oduro Owusu also mentioned that 18,212 students were admitted for the 2019/2020 academic year consisting of 15,167 undergraduates and 3,025 postgraduates. The University of Ghana has 409 international students so far for this academic year. Bringing the total to 36,813 new admissions for the 2019/2020 academic year.
According to the Vice-Chancellor, the Student Representative Council (SRC) of the university wishes to undertake the construction of a new 2,500 capacity hostel to help curb accommodation slippage.
In a new policy, freshers-first accommodation which will soon be rolled out to guarantee residency for first-year students. The existing policy meant that continuing systems can keep their residency until completion but this will change in the 2020/2021 University of Ghana admissions.
The need for the construction of the new University of Ghana Hostels is salient following its massive intake of students yearly. Being the largest University in Ghana, accommodation issues are expected, however, the new University of Ghana Hostels to be built will reduce this headache of accommodation within the University.
