UTAS to get 400-bed capacity students’ hostel

Hey there, university students! We have some exciting news to share with you. The Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFund) has given the green light for the construction of a brand new student hostel at the Clement Kubindiwo Tedem – University of Technology and Applied Sciences (CKT-UTAS). During the Second Congregation ceremony of the University in Navrongo, Upper East Region, Professor Mohammed Salifu, the Director-General of the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC), revealed this wonderful development. He mentioned that the GTEC took the initiative to make this happen.

Here’s the situation: the CKT-UTAS currently has a student population of 3,086, but sadly, only has two hostels with a total capacity of 256 beds. Which means only about 9% of the student population can get accommodation, and 91% of the students have nowhere to stay.

According to Professor Salifu, this special intervention by the GETFund will address the accommodation problem faced by CKT-UTAS students. The GTEC has plans to invest in other important areas too.

Professor Salifu mentioned that they will provide students and office accommodation, as well as operational vehicles. This shows their commitment to improving the overall educational experience at CKT-UTAS. In addition to CKT-UTAS, three other public universities will also benefit from similar projects, tailored to their specific needs. This demonstrates the dedication of the GTEC in supporting higher education institutions across the country.

Professor Salifu acknowledged that challenges are plentiful, but he emphasised the importance of working together as stakeholders to overcome them. As the University’s enrolment figures rise and internally generated resources increase, they hope to secure more significant allocations for investments like these.

It’s great to see that the management of CKT-UTAS is taking steps to improve their financial situation. Professor Salifu was delighted to hear that the University is up-to-date on its utility bills and has no outstanding debts with NEDCo. This positive news shows the University’s commitment to financial responsibility.

Professor Salifu also addressed the issue of utilities such as NEDCo and the Ghana Water Company Limited threatening disconnections due to unpaid bills. He reassured CKT-UTAS management that the GTEC will continue to support them and ensure that the University reaches its full potential as quickly as possible.
